Removal of PCB oil transformers in North Macedonia

Dismantling and safe removal of PCB-contaminated transformers — oil draining, decontamination of the casing and core, ADR transport and metal recycling. Full documentation for inspections. 17 years of experience, since 2009.

Contaminated transformer removal
from dismantling to recycling

Transformers with PCB oil are a legacy of 1970s and 1980s power infrastructure — and North Macedonia still has a significant number of distribution and industrial transformers whose oil contains polychlorinated biphenyls. Removing them is not just a matter of draining the oil: the casing, core and windings are also contaminated and must be decontaminated or disposed of as hazardous waste.

Our team handles complete dismantling and disposal — safe oil draining, dismantling the equipment with a crane and special tools, decontaminating parts that can be salvaged, ADR transport and recycling of metals (copper, steel) at licensed foundries. All with strict emissions control and full documentation for regulatory inspections.

We have experience with distribution transformers up to 1 MVA, power transformers up to 100 MVA, dry-type and oil-filled transformers, and contaminated substations on factory sites and in municipal distribution networks. Every job is scheduled during downtime — with no interruption to the power supply.

What's included in
PCB transformer removal

From contamination assessment to metal recycling — all in one package.

Contamination assessment

Oil sampling, analysis of ppm values, assessment of the condition of the casing and core.

Oil draining

Safe draining of the PCB oil into ADR containers before the equipment is dismantled.

Transformer dismantling

With a crane, sealed platform and special tools — no release into the environment.

Decontamination

Mechanical and chemical cleaning of the casing and core to a level fit for recycling.

ADR transport

Special transport of contaminated parts to a licensed facility.

Metal recycling

Copper and steel are recycled at licensed foundries, with certificates.

Questions we
get asked most

Does the whole transformer have to be removed, or just the oil?
If the transformer was built before 1985 or the oil analysis shows more than 50 ppm, we recommend dismantling the entire unit — the casing, core and windings are also contaminated and must be decontaminated or disposed of as hazardous waste.
How long does it take to dismantle a transformer?
Smaller distribution transformers (up to 1 MVA) are dismantled in 1–2 days. Large power transformers take 3–7 days, with cranes and special transport.
What happens to the transformer's metal?
After decontamination, the metal (copper and steel) is recycled at licensed foundries. A contaminated casing and core are disposed of as hazardous waste, or decontaminated if that is technically worthwhile.
What transport do you use for old transformers?
ADR-certified transport with special platform vehicles and box trailers that seal hermetically. Large transformers need a crane and an escort.
Do I get documentation for the destruction?
Yes — DKO forms, laboratory reports, destruction certificates and metal recycling certificates. All in line with the Stockholm Convention and the national Rulebook on the handling of PCBs.
